The Susman Graduate Student conference is an annual event hosted by graduate students in Rutgers’ history department. This year’s theme was “Thinking with Empire.” To capture that theme, I searched the British Library’s Flickr account for those ubiquitous nineteenth century guides to the peoples and styles of dress within the British Empire. The British Library, as usual, did not disappoint. I then created a composite of all of those separate images using GIMP, and designed the layout and chose typeface using Scribus.
